BACK OUR CALL FOR A TOURIST LEVY

Lambeth Labour wants your support in calling for an Overnight Visitor Levy to be introduced in Lambeth and London-wide.

An overnight levy, sometimes called a tourist levy, would be a small charge paid by tourists and visitors on accommodation costs such as hotels and short-term lets.

Similar schemes are already in place in cities across Europe. And in the UK, in Liverpool and Manchester, there are pilot schemes operated by the local Business Improvement Districts charging £1 to £2 per night and Edinburgh will operate a scheme at 5% levy from July 2026 and is expected to yield £50m per year for the City.

Lambeth Labour believes that this is a fair and progressive way to ensure that mass tourism and global attractions contribute sustainability to residents and communities within the borough.

Lambeth is home to some of London’s most visited attractions. The London Eye, Brixton’s 02 Academy, The National Theatre, Oval Cricket Ground. The South Bank, with its theatre, film, concert halls and galleries, attracts over three million visits each month, with nearly 200,000 extra visitors at night each weekend.

We’re incredibly proud of this, and we want to do everything we can as a council to expand and strengthen our borough as a leading destination to visit and live in. The revenue from what Lambeth Labour calls the ‘Love Lambeth Levy’ could be allocated towards public realm improvements, such as street cleaning and general upkeep and maintenance of the borough and promote Lambeth as a leading destination to visit and enjoy.
