Lambeth Labour understands the real need and urgency of the housing crisis caused by the previous Tory and Liberal Democrat governments and is committed to delivering new, affordable, and sustainable homes for our residents.
A great example of this is the new Fenwick South development in Clapham, a 100% council rent development that delivers high-quality affordable homes for nearly 150 residents. The development includes solar panels to deliver cheaper bills for residents, alongside secure cycle storage to promote sustainable transport.
While the Greens and Liberal Democrats continue to oppose affordable housing developments in our borough, as we saw at Roman Rise in Gipsy Hill, we stand with residents, with the vulnerable, and with those living in temporary accommodation. Because every new home is a life transformed.
But this delivery isn’t just about bricks and mortar, it’s about opportunity and inclusive growth. That’s why we push for every new development to create apprenticeships, training, and work experience for local residents, especially our young people. Fenwick South delivered 16 new job starts for residents alongside training opportunities.
Growth must mean opportunity for everyone.
It was also great to see our Labour government pledge £39 billion investment over the next decade to build new Affordable Homes in the recent Spending Review, the biggest cash injection into social and affordable housing in a generation.
For comparison, the previous Conservative government only committed £11.5bn in its last five-year programme. Labour is nearly doubling that amount in the same time frame.
This matters because housing costs are the single biggest driver of poverty and inequality in London, so this is a vital and long-overdue boost, and we will continue to push to ensure Lambeth gets its fair share.
Rather than shouting from the sidelines, Lambeth Labour is delivering new homes, pushing for our borough’s fair share from the government, and fighting to ensure everyone has a safe, secure, and affordable place to call home, as set out in our borough plan.
