Cllr Ed Davie is the Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, and a councillor in Thornton ward.
People caring for family members and friends with different challenges make a vital contribution to our community.
Without them those they care for would suffer and services would not be able to cover the huge amount of unpaid work they do.
It is why we Lambeth Labour Councillors are using this Carers’ Rights Day to flag up the importance of ensuring unpaid carers know their rights and find out how to access support.
With one in ten people in the UK caring for lived ones and 6,000 new people becoming carers every day, better connecting carers to information and support has been a major focus of our work around the Lambeth Carers’ Strategy as set out in the Action Plan for Carers.
To deliver greater support to carers, we are funding, with the NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group, a brand new Carers’ card scheme. Our vision is for families and carers in Lambeth to feel recognised, valued and included as equal partners in the support and care for the person they care for. Equally we want families and carers to have full, enjoyable and confident lives in their own right alongside their caring role.
The Lambeth Carers’ Strategy seeks to improve the quality of life of unpaid carers in our borough. We are working towards ensuring all carers are able to have a life of their own alongside caring, are protected from financial hardship caused by their caring role, are supported to stay mentally and physically well, and are at the heart of decision making.
Carers Hub Lambeth and Age UK Lambeth are working in partnership to develop this exciting new scheme, and are busy getting everything in place ready to launch next year. The Carers’ Card scheme seeks to connect unpaid carers to vital information and support, and to recognise their huge contribution to our community. By signing up for the Carers Card, carers will get information to help in their caring role, a chance to stay in the loop with events, training and news, and discounts at participating Lambeth services and businesses.
