Lambeth Greens’ embarassing failure to oppose Conservative cuts has been unveiled for the first time, after an information request revealed that Lambeth Green councillors had failed to lobby the Tory government about the impact of Tory cuts on the borough.
After attacking Labour about the impact of Tory cuts in the borough, Lambeth Greens submitted an information request about all lobbying of central government that Labour councillors had done about cuts since 2014.
But the request backfired after it revealed that Labour had written dozens of letters to central government about cuts to Lambeth services, social care, schools, police, the NHS and public health – as well as many others – while Lambeth Greens hadn’t written at all to Tory ministers to oppose cuts to the services that Lambeth residents rely on.
The request revealed that the only Green lobbying had been to sign a national joint letter on school cuts – also signed by many Lambeth Labour councillors. After the request was submitted, Lambeth Green leader Cllr Bartley wrote a cringeworthy letter to Theresa May that attacked Lambeth council but failed to criticise the Tory policy of austerity or to demand further funding for local services.
Cllr Andy Wilson said: “Once again, we see that Lambeth Greens are all talk and no action. After months of claiming to be the real opposition and claiming to challenge austerity, the embarassing reality is there for all to see. And the last minute cringeworthy letter to Theresa May after they were caught out shows where the Greens priorities really are – attacking Lambeth council rather than challenging Tory policies that are causing significant pain for Lambeth residents.
Lambeth Labour have been opposing Tory austerity since 2010 – leading major campaigns to save local services, challenging Tory ministers directly on their policies and taking the message to Downing Street that austerity must end. We’ll keep fighting Tory cuts – and it’s time the Green party did too”.
