Campaign to extend Santander bikes to Brixton

Cllr Jenny Brathwaite, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability recently wrote to the Mayor of London to call for the extension of the TFL Cycle Hire Scheme to Brixton. This extension is long overdue and would greatly benefit residents in Brixton and throughout much of Lambeth. A copy of the letter can be seen below.

Boris Johnson MP

Mayor of London

City Hall, The Queen's Walk,

London, SE1 2AA

Dear Mr Mayor,

I am contacting you regarding the Transport for London Cycle Hire Scheme and the possibility of extending the scheme to Brixton. Lambeth Council has made a significant commitment to ensuring that our borough is the most cycle-friendly in London and the extension of the Cycle Hire Scheme would represent an important contribution to that ambition.

The TfL Cycle Hire Scheme has been extremely successful since its launch in 2010, but too little benefit has been felt in boroughs south of the river, like Lambeth. That is despite the increased demand for these facilities in Lambeth and in particular, in Brixton.  Brixton is a thriving town centre going through extensive regeneration so its population is set to grow and it is essential to meet the transport demands that this brings in a sustainable way. Existing transport links are already under strain: Brixton already has one of the highest pollution levels in London and the A23 which runs through Brixton is an extremely busy bus network and is heavily used by Lambeth residents. Similarly, there is increased dependence on Brixton Underground (already the 9th busiest station on the network). Given these issues, it is beholden on the Mayor to encourage and give access to bikes as alternative methods of sustainable transport. There is already clear demand for such an extension: of the London boroughs, Lambeth has the third highest commuter journeys made by bikes.

Extending the scheme would also be an important way to support the growth of cycling in the Borough. Indeed, in addition to significant work being implemented by Lambeth’s own transport team, the spread of the cycle hire will integrate with other cycling initiatives that are being planned and are already implemented, such as the Quietways schemes and the Central London Cycling Grid.

I ask that you therefore reaffirm your commitment to encouraging more cycling in Lambeth by agreeing to fund the extension of the Cycle Hire Scheme to Brixton. It is this borough’s ambition to increase all trips made by bike from 15% in 2015 to 20% in 2020. Please help us achieve this.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Councillor Jennifer Brathwaite

Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability
