Stockwell Ward Councillor, Lucy Caldicott, and Oval Ward Councillor, Philip Normal, were pleased to join local community arts organisation, Art4Space, at their recent summer party to celebrate 20 years of visual art in the community in Stockwell. Beginning with a start-up grant of just £50 in 1999, Art4Space has developed into a thriving social enterprise running training courses and workshops on site and in local schools and housing associations, and also hosting local creative businesses and projects.
Art4Space is particularly known for its use of mosaic in some of its projects which can be found all around Stockwell. For example, the mural celebrating the life of local doctor, Dr Annie McCall and the history of the Annie McCall Maternity Hospital which is right next to the Stockwell Studios which is where Art4Space is based. One of the most popular attractions at the 20th birthday event was crockery smashing to create the building blocks for future mosaics!
Lucy and Philip paid tribute to the work of Art4Space in bringing Stockwell’s diverse communities together through visual arts. In allowing people to express themselves creatively, art provides such an important way to escape the tensions of the day to day. Talented local singer, Awa, performed a song she’d written especially to celebrate the anniversary.
Art4Space will be running a range of workshops for children through the summer holidays, find out more here.
